Google Eyeing UK YouTube Movie Streaming
Google has long been working to turn YouTube into to a content portal that has more than just user-generated videos and has been in talks with Hollywood for years on content deals. The source claims that the reason the UK is being looked at is that Google sees less competition in that market right now. The service would reportedly come to the U.S. later.
If Google moves ahead with the plan, it would put YouTube in competition with Amazon, which just acquired UK streaming movie service LoveFilm in January, along with Netflix, which is still eyeing a launch across the pond. Google has earmarked $100 million for striking content deals with studios and other premium content providers in its quest to expand its offerings beyond the homemade videos that dominate the site.
